Brief history of Chesapeake Real Estate and the City of Chesapeake.

If you are interested in the history of the City of Chesapeake, Virginia, the information is abundant. Here in this article I will try to explain the connection with the City of Chesapeake and how it applies to Chesapeake Real Estate in the general area of Hampton Roads. Chesapeake history goes way back, beginning around 1963 as at that time the City of South Norfolk merged with the area of Norfolk County to become known as Chesapeake. There is a long and interesting history in the record for the City of Chesapeake including many landmarks and new communities developed around the new City of Chesapeake. Some say the English began to settle in the area of Chesapeake back around the year of 1620. Initial settlements began along hte Elizabeth River banks. Records indicate that Norfolk County was founded somewhere in the time frame of 1636.

The Revolutionary War began to affect the Chesapeake area shortly after the beginning of the Revolutionary war. Some papers suggest that the British Royal Governor Lord Dunmore actually had his forces move to the Great Bridge area from the area of Norfolk. He then dug his Army in to wait for the American forces to bring the battle to them. The major clash of the war between the Royal forces and the Ameican forces occurred around early December 1775. This battle was later referred to as the Historic Battle of Great Bridge. This battle occurred near the area of what is now the Chesapeake Municipal Center which is one of the busiest building in the Chesapeake area. American forces was able to overcome the Lord Dunmore forces in short order and the Royal forces quickly retreated to Norfolk.
